Do you still get questioned by strangers about why your kids are out of school? I'm sure you do, because I still do after all these years. You've heard them all before, the questions are basically the same, "Is it a school holiday?" or "No school today?" Yes, we've heard it a million times and to keep an expressionless face that doesn't scream something like, "None of your business!" can sometimes be a bit of a strain. I think people just automatically say things without thinking. Here's an example that we're all familiar with: You see your neighbor washing their car, so you automatically say, "My car next!" In my preMommy days I was a flight attendant and when I greeted the passengers entering through the 1st Class Cabin (the only entry for all passengers) the response from them was always the same, "Did you save these seats for me?" Automatic. Without thinking. So instead of rolling your eyes at the next stranger that asks you the same old questions, do like I did when I was a flight attendant... Smile BIG, show authority, and hide behind the cockpit door! TM : )
How do you change someone's truth when they believe with all their being that they are right? Even though we look at the same situation from two sets of eyes, our views are completely opposite. So whose truth is the right one? As adults we need to remember to have an open mind to various ideas. We might not always agree, and we might not be able to change someone's truth, but we can certainly pass on the ability to be accepting of different perspectives to our children. Our children are our future and to teach them tolerance is a truth that, at least for this once, we can all agree upon. TM : )
