Weekly! They do it every week. That's what that means right? I don't understand why a homeschool family would choose something they do every week for the past who knows how long, and miss an opportunity to do something fun with the homeschool community that happens once a year. I just don't get it. Ahhh, well, everyone is different and that's what makes homeschool so great. So here's to uniqueness and remembering flexibility in our homeschool lives! TM : )
I am always surprised by homeschoolers who are so rigid with their schedules. We're homeschoolers for goodness sakes and we can be flexible when something comes up. I plan 2 parties a year for the homeschool community and when I ask if a family is coming, the response is, "Oh, that's when we do our weekly blah-biddy-blah... sorry, we can't be there. But thanks!"

TM : ) Today I got the pleasure of meeting many new families who have decided to homeschool their children. It is always interesting to me how new families think and how they perceive what homeschool means to them. I also spoke with many returning families and I got to hear about the progress that they have made since they started their homeschool lifestyle. What amazes me are those returning parents that teach like a traditional school, hours and all. I think for these parents it just feels comfortable teaching how you think your child would learn if they were in a traditional school. STOP, please. This is a reminder to all homeschoolers new and returning, THIS IS HOMESCHOOL! We are free to be creative with our teaching, we are free to move on and go forward as fast as our child wants to go, we are free to be flexible. We are free to think outside of the box. Homeschool, it's a lifestyle. TM : )
Lately, math has been the favorite subject for my youngest. Believe it or not, math has been the ONLY subject that my little first grader will do. As she explains to me, "I have to master 4th grade math Mom!" I have been quite calm about this as she is past her grade level, but what about any other subjects? I do realize that anything to do with the alphabet; reading, writing, you know, ENGLISH, has gone out the window for the moment. So what am I to do? Well, ... I let her do as much as she wants. I have to remind myself that this is homeschool and math is the "new black". TM : )
AskTracy's definition of flexibility, freedom and togetherness... Flexibility--Not just changing your schedule, but to be able to change up what you are teaching at that very moment. Freedom--To teach a subject that your children really enjoy and take as LONG as you want. But also to take the time to explain something that needs to be understood. Togetherness-- I don't think you need an explanation for this word. We are fortunate to be able to have a close relationship with our children because we homeschool. We get to be there first hand to hear their hopes and dreams and help guide them accordingly. Lucky them, lucky us! TM : ) Flexibility in homeschool does not always refer to your schedule. There is flexibility in what you teach, and how you teach it. Just because the directions say, "Add 1 cup of sugar", does that mean we have to? What if I use a 1/2 cup of sugar instead? Does that mean the recipe won't come out right? Or does that mean I made it especially for me? Thoughts to think about. TM : )
